Since the owner’s parents live nearby, they requested a place for the family to gather and children to play. Therefore, we moved the building to the north, created a garden on the south side, and created a two-story terrace between the hall and garden. By enclosing the two-story terrace with columns and braces, the structure serves as a screen while remaining open.Save this picture!© Yosuke HaradaInside the house, the first floor consists of all the common areas and the second floor has the private rooms. Through small windows, a tiny light penetrates into the living room from each bedroom.Save this picture!© Yosuke HaradaThe building is made up of braced shinkabe walls (walls with exposed columns) around its perimeter and ookabe walls (walls with unexposed columns) on the inside. The shinkabe walls are covered with clear painted lauan plywood and the interior ookabe walls are finished with white wallpaper. All rooms have white walls and are supported by wooden frame structures and the ceiling is exposed to reveal the sloped roof. The interior spaces are not large, but we expected to create a variety of expressions by varying the height of the ceilings and the range of materials.Save this picture!© Yosuke HaradaSave this picture!Elevations and SectionsSave this picture!© Yosuke HaradaIn this house, we tried to create spaces that play with the idea of duality, mediating between opposing elements and concepts such as lines and surfaces, varying scales, structures and facades, light and shadow, and demolition and construction. Chanderpaul, Johnson, Hemraj hit fifties as Jaguars end day 1 in control

first_imgA string of half-centuries from the top order left defending Regional 4-Day champs Guyana Jaguars in the driver’s seat heading into day two of their first round encounter versus Leeward Hurricanes. At the Sir Viv Richards Ground in Antigua, Guyana were 210-4 from 90 overs at stumps following a successful opening day after choosing to bat.All-rounder Chris Barnwell was 3 not out awaiting a new partner after left-hander Vishaul Singh departed a few balls prior to stumps for 25.The early impetus was provided by an aggressive approach from Chandrapaul Hemraj who got his season off to a brilliant start with a half-century.The Windies Test left-hander caressed six fours and two maximums on his way to 52 from just 61 balls. He added 74 for the opening stand with top-scorer Tagenarine Chanderpaul before he was dismissed.Chanderpaul also started the new year with a gritty knock of 60 at the top of the order. The left-hander faced some 240 deliveries and struck 7 fours as he wore out the Hurricane bowlers.Skipper Leon  Johnson, who got into some form with a ton during the Jags practice game, continued his fruitful run as he crafted 59 from 123 deliveries with 8 fours and a solitary 6.With both openers back in the dressing room, Johnson and Chanderpaul then teamed up as they also added a solid half-century stand, taking the Jaguars over the 200 mark. When the top-order ended, Singh and Barnwell steadied the ship before the former was dismissed. Day two’s action continues today.last_img read more

The real reason the San Jose Sharks had to fire Pete DeBoer

first_imgSharks owner Hasso Plattner couldn’t fire the entire team, so he fired head coach Pete DeBoer on Wednesday. After five straight losses and amid a season where expectations were high, talent was ample, and disappointment has far outweighed success, the move was necessary. The Sharks problems aren’t completely tied to DeBoer, who coached the team for four-plus seasons — far from it — but he was not providing any solutions to the issues this team — which still fancies itself a Stanley Cup …last_img read more

South African nation mourns the passing of Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela

first_imgJohannesburg, Friday 6 December 2013 – Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela, South Africa’s former President who dedicated his life to the country’s struggle for human rights, freedom and the fight for democracy, passed away last night at the age of 95.Brand South Africa Chairperson Chichi Maponya joins the nation, leaders from across the world and the broader international community, in expressing deep sorrow at the passing of former President Nelson Mandela saying, “Madiba embodied our hopes and the realisation of our dreams.”“We are in deep mourning following this loss of indescribable magnitude which is today reverberating across the world. During his imprisonment for 27 years, Madiba carried the aspirations of multitudes of our people who yearned for a free and democratic South Africa. He inspired South Africans and people around the world alike to fight for South Africa’s liberation despite the seeming impossibility of this vision.”“One of the greatest gifts he has bequeathed to this nation is the courage and strength to believe in a tomorrow that is better than today, a tomorrow in which our people live in dignity and prosperity.”“He lived these ideals and brought them to life during his leadership of the country. He has inspired thousands of people to make these same values a part of their lives even when he left public office.”“To many, Nelson Mandela will be remembered as the greatest statesman in the world. His voice and inspirational leadership has contributed enormously to the global fight for democracy and human rights and this has touched millions of people far beyond the borders of our country.”“It is now up to each of us to carry this work forward, to play our part to ensure his legacy endures and South Africa continues to inspire triumph over seemingly insurmountable challenges. As South Africa marks 20 years of democracy, we must continue the work of Madiba – the work of building a society in which all our people enjoy the best that South Africa has to offer, freedom from want, prosperity and development.”“We join the nation and the world in conveying our deepest condolences to the Mandela family. We also offer our immense gratitude and appreciation for sharing Tata with us. We join millions in praying that Madiba’s soul may rest in peace. Lala Ngoxolo Tata,” concluded Ms Maponya.Note to editorsText of President Zuma’s official statement on the passing of Former President Nelson Mandela: http://www.thepresidency.gov.za/index.htmOfficial dedicated Mandela website: http://www.mandela.gov.za/About Brand South AfricaBrand South Africa is the official marketing agency of South Africa, with a mandate to build the country’s brand reputation, in order to improve its global competitiveness abroad. Ibrahimovic to miss PSG’s Champions League clash against Barcelona

first_imgPSG will face a stern test against Barcelona without Ibrahimovic in tonight’s clashZlatan Ibrahimovic is out for the match against Barcelona, and Paris Saint-Germain must find a way to cope without him.Ibrahimovic, the French league’s top scorer over the past two seasons, has been ruled out of Tuesday’s Champions League match with a left heel injury. He missed the last two PSG games because of the injury and coach Laurent Blanc said intensive treatment up until Monday morning failed to resolve the problem.”We tried this morning. But in reality I’d already started preparing for the match without him,” Blanc said. “It won’t be easy and we know it. We had some difficult games without him last season. The opponents are much more attentive when he’s around.”PSG has made a sluggish start to the season, drawing six of nine games so far.Uruguay forward Edinson Cavani is expected to lead the attack in his favored center forward’s role against a Barcelona team that has yet to concede a goal.Cavani is still short of the form which saw him score 78 goals in 104 games for Napoli before joining PSG for 64 million euros ($81.3 million) last season. The Uruguay striker has been craving a chance to play in his center forward role, however, and now has a chance to show what he can do on the big stage. But when Ibrahimovic has been missing, PSG has won only 40 percent of its matches.”It’s a very important game for us and we need him,” PSG left back Maxwell said. “We’re still lacking in intensity and tomorrow is a good chance for us to show that we’re still to be reckoned with.”advertisementBlanc said other players need to step up a level now that Ibrahimovic is not around to bail them out with his spectacular goals.”If we don’t play well as a team tomorrow it’s going to be hard,” Blanc said. “We can compensate for his absence through our teamwork.”Barcelona coach Luis Enrique is not concerned either way.”It doesn’t change anything for us that Zlatan isn’t playing,” Enrique said. “It’s obviously a big loss for PSG but our way of playing won’t change.”Ibrahimovic turns 33 next month and has been picking up injuries more often. He tore a thigh muscle last April and missed the second leg of the Champions League quarterfinals against Chelsea, which PSG lost 2-0 to go out on away goals after winning the home leg 3-1.”We’ll see how the injury goes from day to day,” Blanc said. “The medical staff are doing all they can and we’ll be delighted if we get him back for the Monaco game (on Sunday).”Blanc puts PSG’s slow start to the season down to a lack of intensity, which his players will certainly need to show more of in order to stop a Barcelona attack led by Lionel Messi and Neymar.”Tomorrow we’ll be playing our masters, or almost, given that they’ve been playing with this same philosophy of play for 30 years,” Blanc said. “It’s an extraordinary match to take part in. If we’re determined and aggressive then we’ll do well.”But he thinks Barcelona’s defense has frailties, despite not conceding a goal.”I’ve seen all of their games and their opponents had chances in every one,” Blanc said. “But Barcelona hurt you when they’re on top, they take advantage. That’s what we’re missing and we have to get that back.”last_img read more
